Doodlebug: A Novel in Doodles

25 03 2011

Doodlebug by Karen Romano Young is a book about Doreen/Dodo/Doodlebug Bussey, her sister Maureen/Momo, her mom and dad, and her friends Elizabeth (Cootie Catcher) and (Magic) Marco. Dodo is moving from L.A to San Francisco because she was expelled from her old school because she  put Ritalin, her A.D.D medicine on her classmate’s desks. She goes through losing a cat, detention, prismacolor pens, and a rebellious sister-and decides that she does not want to move again.

Doreen Bussey has a bad record. She is not good at paying attention and has been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder. She has made friends with Marco Pinho and Elizabeth the Cootie Catcher. They help her put her sister where she should be-the choir!

This book is completely doodles and scribbles. I am not sure who did all the illustrations, and there are probably lots of people besides Karen Romano Young that worked on the sketches.

I think the message in this story is that you should do what your heart tells you to do and not let other people tell you what to do. I give this book 4 1/2 stars because there were a few parts that I did not like.
